Downsizing – What to Do with All of Your Stuff?
Moving house can be a challenge. Especially if the prospective house you will be moving into is considerably smaller than your existing home. The idea of downsizing and getting rid of clutter is a nice one in theory, but in practice it can be stressful.
Choosing what to keep and what not to keep can be a difficult task on its own, but then getting rid of what is no longer needed can be a minefield. Popular methods used to ensure efficient down-sizing include:
Online auctions and sales – Listing items online in auctions and on classified boards can be effective, and earn some cash at the same time.
Friends and relatives – Enquire with friends and family to see if they are in need of any of your unwanted furniture.
Car Boot Sale – It’s an old method but can still be effective if what you are selling is in good condition and still has some worth.
Charity – Take items that are still usable to your local charity store, however, it’s not worth taking clothes that are years old that you wouldn’t wear, do everyone a favour and throw them out.
If all else fails, invest in some good garage storage. This can be great if you have some items that you really want to keep but don’t really want them cluttering up the house. If stored correctly, in a secure, dry environment there’s no reason they shouldn’t remain in good condition.
Be ruthless and don’t hold onto items just for the sake of it – if you can’t be ruthless, maybe downsizing just isn’t for you!
