<p>Climbing a mountain is much easier than one would think. You start at the bottom, you progress towards base camp, you hit the middle of the mountain, and then you reach the summit.</p>
<p>As climbers ascend, they come into contact with different elements such as thinner air and colder temperatures. If they climb the mountain too quickly, they will not be used to the new environment, and they will be out of their comfort zone. The same principle holds true for those of you who are climbing your own mountains, and striving for goals. As you climb higher to reach your goals, you will experience a different feeling.</p>
<p>You may feel anxious, like the mountaineer feels at the bottom of the mountain, knowing that his journey has only begun. You may feel overwhelmed like the mountaineer who is at base camp, knowing that he has many steps to climb. You may feel excited, like the mountaineer who has just hit the middle of the mountain, knowing that the peak is within reach. You may feel proud of yourself, like the mountaineer who has reached the summit, knowing that he obtained his goal.</p>
<p>So, How Can You Climb The Mountain To Your Goals?</p>
<p>1. Start at the bottom &#8211; establish what your goals are.</p>
<p>* Write down your goals.</p>
<p>* Avoid generalizations such as I want to be happy or I want to be rich. WHAT would make you happy or WHAT would make you rich?</p>
<p>* If you want to be happy, write down how you will accomplish this. Will you take up a new hobby? Will you go back to school? Will you spend more time with friends or family? The more specific you can be, the better your chances of achieving your goal.</p>
<p>* If you want to make more money, list details such as wanting to increase your income by 10% next year.</p>
<p>2. Climb to Base Camp &#8211; devise a plan to obtain your goals.</p>
<p>* Set a specific time period in which you want to obtain your goals &#8211; not just someday because someday leads to a town of somewhere.</p>
<p>* If you want to earn a degree, knowing how long the program is and how many courses you need to take each semester is a great start.</p>
<p>3. Take steps to reach your goals</p>
<p>* What steps would you take to earn a degree?</p>
<p>* Perhaps taking one to two classes to begin with would give you a good idea of what to expect.</p>
<p>* Knowing what courses are offered indicates if the program is for you or if the classes you would be taking would interest you.</p>
<p>4. Achieve your goals &#8211; reward yourself!!</p>
<p>* Once you&#8217;ve earned (or achieved) your goals, be good to yourself. You&#8217;ve earned it!!!</p>
<p>* If there&#8217;s something that you&#8217;ve always wanted to do or wanted to buy, do it now!!</p>
<p>* Be proud that you achieved your goals. This is quite an accomplishment.</p>
<p>Just like climbing a mountain, realizing goals will not happen in one day. But, you can realize them over time. Although your summit may seem too high to climb at the moment, know that starting will be the hard part, and reaching the summit will be your reward.</p>

<p>Question: I own and run a company, but my leadership skills are sometimes lacking. My Senior Team refers to me as &#8220;Mr. Softy,&#8221; because I fail to discipline those who breach company policies. I am having particular difficulty with my VP of Sales. While he does bring in new accounts, he consistently enters them incorrectly and causes all sorts of problems for production staff. My team keeps telling me to &#8220;let him have it,&#8221; but I am not sure what to say. How do I make him accountable without simply firing or threatening to fire him?</p>
<p>Answer: Congratulations! You are already demonstrating great leadership wisdom by seeking solutions aside from threatening job loss. The accountability you want would never develop from firing or threatening to fire, anyway. Exceptional leaders build accountability and empower their employees by asking them questions. My philosophy of leadership is &#8220;ask, don&#8217;t tell.&#8221; Although you have identified the VP of Sales as causing the current problems, make sure you have all the facts. This could be a great opportunity for you to build accountability &#8211; not just in this employee, but in all your employees.</p>
<p>I suggest holding a company-wide meeting, focused on the big picture of how sales orders are processed. Use the situation with the VP of Sales as an example, and ask, &#8220;Is this order representative of how this company functions?&#8221; Either everyone will agree, or an interesting discussion will ensue between the disagreeing parties. Sometimes, your role as a leader is to stay out of the middle and simply facilitate. The managers of your various departments likely understand the facts better than you do, and it is perfectly ok to admit this. Enter the meeting with an open mind. Even if your employees begin by arguing and finger-pointing, they will eventually work through to the facts. You may need to pepper the conversation with questions, but try not to give answers.</p>
<p>Once the group has pinpointed the actual problem and the individual(s) involved, begin discussing solutions. Ask simply, &#8220;How would you like to solve this?&#8221; Even if you have solutions in mind, great leadership requires you to trust others to develop their own answers. Given this is the first time you have undergone this process, I suggest you stay in the meeting. Continue to only ask questions, and if asked your opinion, refrain from giving it. Remind your managers that you trust them to run their departments and make money for your company, so surely you trust them to solve issues, such as this one. Initially, this entire process may be extremely time-consuming and frustrating for everyone involved. Be confident that you are moving in the right direction! Your employees will soon become more energized as they feel empowered, and the time will prove well worthwhile. By the end of this process, you too will find your power and realize you built accountability by merely asking questions. Remember: Ask, don&#8217;t tell.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sport is an excellent medium in which to explore the<br />
mechanics of achievement. My own background is in<br />
Whitewater Canoe Slalom, which requires power and<br />
technique in a constantly changing environment. How is this<br />
for a fitting metaphor for today&#8217;s business environment and<br />
life altogether? You need resources (power), like money,<br />
people or things and use them in skillful ways (technique) to<br />
adapt, grow and thrive in an ever changing and unfolding<br />
environment.</p>
<p>You may know exactly what you want (e.g.: Gold Medal),<br />
even have a detailed and well researched plan or process<br />
to get there and you will still encounter those factors that are<br />
not under your control, factors you haven&#8217;t accounted for.</p>
<p>Even if we were to collect all the experiences ever made in<br />
pursuit of this particular goal and were able to devise a plan<br />
taking all these experiences into account, we would still not<br />
be able to devise a fail proof plan.</p>
<p>No plan, no map can ever be 100% indicative of what<br />
actually happens! So how do we account for that which can&#8217;t<br />
be accounted for? Why am I actually stressing this fact? Isn&#8217;t<br />
it that &#8216;we win some and loose some&#8217;? It certainly can be, if<br />
you are OK with that&#8230;</p>
<p>When I went to the Olympics I had just won the World<br />
Championships the year before and I certainly went there to<br />
win, as did a number of other competitors in my discipline. I<br />
wasn&#8217;t going to leave it to chance. Since I was 8 years old I<br />
was competing in my sport and from about age 16 the<br />
Olympics was my declared goal and passion. Now I am<br />
here and NOW everything has to fall into place, or does it?!</p>
<p>So, what is the answer? Not to make a plan at all? Or to<br />
leave particular things open and unanswered, or to have a<br />
number of plans (A, B, C, &#8230;), or to &#8216;do your best and don&#8217;t<br />
worry about the outcome&#8217;?</p>
<p>Before I give my take on this, I want to stress the important<br />
fact that at this point I was prepared to &#8216;peak&#8217;. I went through<br />
many troths to get to this peak and these &#8216;down times&#8217;, or<br />
&#8216;basic training periods&#8217; are what provided the foundation for<br />
the peak. When you truly take in the inevitability of this<br />
principle you can use it to evaluate what benefits could be<br />
had by periodising the activities of your company or by taking<br />
account for times of action and replenishment in your life.</p>
<p>There is also an important qualitative differentiation. What<br />
you actually &#8216;do&#8217; at your peak, the actual way (technique) you<br />
use your resources may be very different to how you operate<br />
at other times. This may have to necessarily be so, because<br />
of the sustainability of the effort, due to physical or mental<br />
strain. Again, taking this into account will give you more<br />
energy when you really want it, when you need it to make the<br />
difference to your competitors. When you always run on<br />
what you consider &#8216;high&#8217;, where will you get the energy to go<br />
to &#8216;highest&#8217;, or &#8217;smartest&#8217;, or &#8216;most dynamic&#8217;, what ever the<br />
key quality is that you or your team need to excel.</p>
<p>Also know that there is no growth without recovery. It&#8217;s in<br />
times of recovery and replenishment that our bodies and<br />
minds grow and adapt. Understanding this and putting it to<br />
work effectively, is a huge area of gain for athletes and<br />
others wanting to grow and develop.</p>
<p>In summary for now, Actual Achieving doesn&#8217;t come from<br />
nowhere, resources need to be build and techniques need<br />
to be acquired. Peaking all the time is not possible and<br />
much can be gained from positively understanding and<br />
working with this.<br />

<p>How many times have you heard that phrase when you were angry and someone else was trying to calm you down with an &#8220;I&#8217;m sorry.&#8221;   Unless you believe their words, this phrase just doesn&#8217;t work.  Why not?  Well, It doesn&#8217;t work because its an overused phrase.  We say or hear &#8220;I&#8217;m sorry&#8221; on a daily basis.  We use it when we bump into someone, or when we make a simple mistake.  We&#8217;re desensitized to &#8220;I&#8217;m sorry,&#8221; as just being politeness, rather than sincerity.  So when someone truly is angry at you and they hear an &#8220;I&#8217;m sorry&#8221; line or some variation of itit might not always work and in some cases it might anger them because they might interpret it as, &#8220;There&#8230; I said the magic words, now shut up and stop complaining.&#8221;</p>
<p><b>Well then what do I say?</b></p>
<p>Honestly, it&#8217;s <u>less</u> of a matter of WHAT you say than it is HOW you say it.  Any apology really is a good apology, but the other person has to believe that it is genuine otherwise they will just brush it off as a having no real meaning to them.  How is sincerity conveyed?  Sincerity is created when your nonverbal communication matches your words.  Nonverbal communication includes: body position, eye-contact, gestures, voice modulation, and facial expressionto name only a couple.  For the purposes of this article we are not going to go into the nitty-gritty of nonverbal linguistics, but its safe to say that the way you say your words along with your body language  is often more important than the words themselves.  One of the clearest forms of deception is when the words don&#8217;t match up with the person&#8217;s body language.  If someone tells you that they are interested, yet their body is not pointed towards you, then this is known as inconsistency.  To express genuine emotions, you must make sure that your nonverbal communication is in synch with that of your verbal words.  Know that the other person is looking for empathy on your part more than a reason.  They also seek some form of acknowledgement from you.  They want to have both auditory and visual confirmation that you are telling them the truth because their fears will lead them always to be suspicious of any verbal offering that you give them when they are feeling hurt.  When in doubt, just remember this adage:   &#8220;Mean what you say, don&#8217;t just say what you mean.&#8221;</p>

People don&#8217;t care how much you know until they know how much you care.<br />
Do not take others for granted.<br />
Let people know how much you appreciate even the small things they do.</p>
<p><B>Practice the #1 rule of business </B>- Remember to treat people as &#8220;they&#8221; want to be treated, not as you would like to be treated. This is crucial to being a leader.<br />
Everyone likes to be treated differently. Get to know how those around you like to be treated and respect their preferences.<br />
Discover the personalities of others and learn how they get encouraged.</p>
<p><B>Motivate others around you</B> &#8211; Develop a strong interest in your staff and others around you. It&#8217;s easier to motivate with encouragement, support and acknowledgments.<br />
Encourage others to go beyond their limits.<br />
Treat others as you know they can be, not as they are<br />
Ask others who their best boss was and why. Learn from that and motivate them the same way.</p>
<p><B>Empower and encourage others you know</B> &#8211; Offer others public recognition and involve them in important work. Treat people like you know they can do the job.<br />
Have confidence in others to know they can get the job done.<br />
Express your appreciation when jobs are done to expectations.<br />
Encourage others to go beyond their limits and see what they create.</p>
<p><B>Share your vision and mission </B>- Get staff engaged in an activity to meet goals and share the company&#8217;s vision and mission. This will get others excited about future directions and will further motivate them to contribute to being a part of the end results.<br />
Articulate a clear vision to those around you.<br />
Let others know the mission and why you are doing what you do.<br />
Encourage others to be a part of your mission by involving them in the end result</p>
<p><B>Think creatively and don&#8217;t stop at the obvious </B>- Think about options available to you and envision the possibilities of bigger and better ways to do things. Develop the skill of having multiple options instead of settling for the easiest or fastest answer.<br />
Explore different possibilities and ask &#8216;what if&#8217; questions.<br />
Discover new solutions for the old problems &#8211; don&#8217;t take the easy way.<br />
When you think you have the answer, think of something else you can do to make it better.</p>
<p><B>Risk taking within reason by knowing high-risk and low-risk</B> &#8211; Analyze risk. Know when risk taking is an intelligent move and when it shouldn&#8217;t be considered. Form a team of individuals to run ideas by before taking large risks.<br />
Get a consensus from others when taking a risk.<br />
Practice &#8216;analyze risk taking&#8217; by thinking through the whole process before proceeding.<br />
Know the possibilities of the outcome and the good and bad of the end results.</p>
<p><B>Stretch your creativity and encourage that in others</B> Continually stretch your creative powers by thinking outside the box. Stretch out into the unknown and discover better ways of doing things. Set this example for others.<br />
Stretch your way of thinking and encourage that in others.<br />
Keep learning new things and finding better ways of doing what you do.<br />
<B>Be a role model in your creative thinking and see the difference it makes in others.</B></p>
<p><B>Have a passion for what you do and create a sense of purpose Display passion for what you do.</B> Ensure your words are congruent with your actions. Then follow the path of your goals. Focus on the end results and the purpose of your actions.</p>
<p><B>Love what you do and do what you love. </B><br />
Establish a sense of purpose and let your passion show through to others.<br />
Project into the future your long-term goal and desires. Share this vision with others</p>
<p><B>Create an environment of opportunity </B><br />
Create an environment where you and others around you can grow. Discover infinite opportunities by thinking outside the box. Get creative!</p>
<p><B>Give others the opportunity to experience new things and different ways of doing things. </B><br />
Encourage continual learning and new skills.<br />
Produce a richer environment by working at peak performance at high levels</p>
