Latest Mobile Broadband Offering from Virgin
Tuesday, December 29th, 2009The latest launch from Virgin in its mobile broadband range is the coveted 7.2Mb dongle. This has been advertised as a latest tool that will give users a super speed browsing experience, enabling them to stream videos easily and listen to uninterrupted music.
Virgin Media has now announced the launch of this dongle, making it the second provider to bring 7.2Mb speed to users, after Vodafone upped the ante by providing 7.2Mb speeds to its customers earlier this year. With this new speed, Virgin has left peers O2, 3 and Orange far behind, with their maximum speeds being 3.6Mb.
However, industry sources are sceptical whether users will experience anywhere near 7.2Mb speeds, as many external and uncontrollable factors govern the speeds experienced by users. The advertised benefits of being able to watch videos on YouTube or use iPlayer may just be euphemisms, as users may not really get these speeds while they are logged in due to network congestion and tower distance.
Doubts notwithstanding, Virgin is very happy with its product launch. As executive director of mobile at Virgin Media Graeme Oxby puts it, mobile broadband is becoming a highly popular means of communication for millions across the country. Given this, Virgin has brought out this product as part of its constant endeavours to make browsing a pleasant and enjoyable experience for users.
At present the 7.2Mb dongle will be available on a monthly rolling contract or alternatively for 18 months, with data limits set at 1GB or 3GB per month.
